5 tips to extend shelf life in thermoform packaging

Thermoform packaging, when set up correctly, significantly extends a product’s shelf life. But when machine settings, film selection and hygiene details are ignored, the same line can become a source of waste. Here are five practical tips we learned in the field.

1. Choose the right barrier film

Using a multi-layer barrier film according to the product’s sensitivity to oxygen and moisture is the first step that determines shelf life. The wrong film choice undermines the result even on the best machine.

2. Optimize vacuum and gas (MAP) settings

In modified-atmosphere packaging, the gas mix and vacuum level must be calibrated to the product. Verify seal integrity with regular measurement.

A seal-integrity test is the most concrete proof of your shelf-life claim.

3. Balance temperature and sealing pressure

Insufficient heat causes weak adhesion, while excess heat deforms the film. Balancing the two according to film type is critical.

4. Hygiene and cleaning routines

On food lines, daily cleaning and sanitation directly affect microbiological shelf life. Easily removable parts speed up this process.

5. Perform regular maintenance

Periodic maintenance of moulds, seals and heating elements preserves both quality and line continuity.
